Sgt Frank Edward Stubbs, Victoria Cross
10 July 2020
Did you know that there is a memorial to a VC recipient in Pasley Park? Sgt Frank Stubbs, VC, of the Lancashire Fusiliers, grew up in Chapter Road which borders the park and when Southwark Council recognised all the VC awardees from the Borough, it seemed appropriate to place the memorial to his bravery within the park, where it is likely he played as a child.
Sgt Stubbs was killed effecting a landing at Gallipoli in 1915 aged 27 years and was one of 6 VC recipients from that day’s action. Having no living relatives, his medal is displayed at the Fusilier Museum in Bury.
We are very glad to have him with us in the park and it is our intent to decorate around his memorial with poppies.
